Sankara Nethralaya: Pioneering Optometry Education and Eye Care in India
Since its inception in 1978, Sankara Nethralaya has stood as an epitome of excellence in eye care. Founded on Vinayaka Chaturthi by a group of philanthropists led by Sengamedu Srinivasa Badrinath under the visionary guidance of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, the Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, it has grown into a leading non-profit missionary institution. The name 'Sankara Nethralaya', meaning 'The Temple of the Eye', symbolizes its dedication to eye care. Nani A. Palkhivala, former Indian ambassador to the United States, praised it as the "best managed charitable organization in India."
The Elite School of Optometry (ESO), founded in 1985 by Dr. S.S. Badrinath, marks a significant milestone. Established to address the shortage of well-trained optometrists in India, ESO has become a pioneering institution in eye care education. Starting at the main campus in Chennai, the school awarded its own B.Opt degree, with support from esteemed professionals like Prof. Jay M. Enoch and Prof. S.R. Govindarajan. Generous contributions from donors like C.K. Shah of Elite Optical Industries laid the groundwork for a modern optometry program.
In 1987, ESO moved to a 3.17-acre campus at St. Thomas Mount, where it has continued to thrive. Partnerships with the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, from 1994 to 2016, and SASTRA Deemed University since 2017, have elevated its academic standards. The Department of Visual Psychophysics, established in 2008 with funding from the Uthrash Trust and significant endowment from Dr. P.P. Santanam, has enhanced its research capabilities.
Exciting news! Sankara Nethralaya is expanding to Kolkata with a new campus in New Town Rajarhaat by 2024. This expansion will offer Bachelor of Optometry degrees, affiliated with MAKAUT (formerly WBUT University).
