In life, there are many players whose goals we defend with enthusiasm and support, but when circumstances become foggy, they often leave us behind.
In December 1937, during a match between Chelsea FC and Charlton FC at Stamford Bridge Stadium in London, play was halted and eventually abandoned in the 60th minute due to dense fog. Unbeknownst to him, Charlton FC’s legendary goalkeeper, Sam Bartram, continued guarding the goal for an additional fifteen minutes after the game was called off.
Bartram didn’t hear the referee's whistle because of the noise from the crowd behind him. He stood at the goal, arms outstretched, completely focused in the fog, believing his teammates were on the attack.
It was only fifteen minutes later that the stadium police approached and informed him that the match had been stopped. With great sorrow, Sam Bartram uttered these famous words: "HOW SAD THAT MY FRIENDS FORGOT ME WHEN I WAS GUARDING THEIR GATE."
