A.R. Rahman introduced the Oud, a traditional Arabic instrument, in the iconic Kadhal Desam soundtrack

In a groundbreaking moment for Indian music, A.R. Rahman introduced the Oud, a traditional Arabic instrument, in the iconic Kadhal Desam soundtrack. This instrument, rarely seen outside of Arabic countries, had never been used in India before. Rahman, always pushing creative boundaries, sourced the Oud from Kuwait and handed it over to a musician, asking him to explore its sound.

The musician worked through the notes, striving to bring out the "Sa" and eventually reaching "Pa" (in Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa). Rahman, satisfied with the sound, guided him through the melody that would become Mustapha Mustapha with the notations "Sa Ga Ma Pa Pa Ma." This innovative use of the Oud added a unique touch to the song, marking its historic introduction to Indian music.
