“Wealth, like a flowing river, must nourish and uplift all who come in contact with it.”
Rooted in Hindu mythology, Dhanteras, also called Dhanatrayodashi, marks the first day of Diwali and is traditionally celebrated two days before the festival of lights. It is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, Lord Kuber, the god of treasure, and Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician. On this day, people practice Lakshmi puja, clean their homes, and purchase valuable items such as gold, silver, and utensils—rituals believed to attract prosperity, well-being, and good fortune for the upcoming year.
According to legend, Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) on this day, carrying the nectar of immortality (Amrit) in a pot, symbolizing health and vitality. The day also honors the tools and resources that support our livelihood, with the belief that welcoming them with reverence ensures abundance throughout the year.
As Adi Shankaracharya teaches in the Bhaja Govindam, "Artha-manartham bhavaya nityam"—we are reminded that while material wealth plays an important role in life, its true value lies in how we use it to serve others and foster harmony. Prosperity becomes meaningful only when shared with compassion and used to uplift those around us.
Let us celebrate Dhanteras by embracing both material and spiritual wealth, recognizing that true riches lie in health, knowledge, and acts of kindness. May this day inspire us to nurture our inner light, welcome prosperity with a pure heart, and use our blessings for the greater good.
Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful and meaningful Dhanteras! πͺ
