Inviting Trenetralaya to EIVOC 2025 – A Heartfelt Visit

Today, along with Ms. Ekta Saha (Administrator, SNESO Kolkata) and Ms. Mousumi Patro (Assistant Professor, SNESO Kolkata), I had the privilege of visiting Trenetralaya Eye Hospital to extend a warm invitation to their Optometry team—faculty, fellows, and interns—for the Elite International Vision Science and Optometry Conference (EIVOC 2025).

We were touched by the gracious hospitality extended by Dr. Partha Biswas, Medical Director, and deeply thankful to Mr. Prajjwal Ghosh (Head In-charge, Senior Optometrist) and Mr. Kingshuk Bhattacharyya (Senior Optometrist) for their support and time.

Sincere gratitude to Monideepa Biswas Ma’am, Administrator, and Dr. Preeyam Biswas, Consultant Ophthalmologist, for their warm welcome.

A special thanks to the vibrant Optometry Department, students, interns, and fellows for pausing their clinical duties to join us in this interactive session. Your enthusiasm truly reflects the future strength of Indian Optometry.

Why is our language called ‘Tamizh’? Ki. Va. Jagannathan (Ki. Va. Ja.), the legendary Tamil scholar and literary visionary, once found himself in the divine presence of Periyava, when a question was posed that momentarily stilled his erudition: “Why is our language called ‘Tamizh’?” Taken aback, Ki. Va. Ja. admitted with humility that he had never contemplated that question deeply. He reflected, “If someone were to ask me about the greatness of Tamizh, I could speak for hours—on its antiquity, its grammar, its literature, its uniqueness among world languages. But why it is called ‘Tamizh’—I do not know.” With characteristic grace, Periyava smiled and said: “This is merely my thought—neither confirmed by scholars nor inscribed in any linguistic doctrine. Swadesamitran, a pioneering Tamil newspaper, was founded in 1882 by the visionary and social reformer G. Subramania Iyer, a man who dedicated his life to the ideals of nationalism, social justice, and progressivism. Born in Thanjavur in 1855, G. Subramania Iyer was not only a journalist but also an ardent supporter of India's freedom struggle and a firm believer in social reforms. He was the founder-editor of The Hindu newspaper as well, before parting ways with it to focus entirely on Swadesamitran. Through his journalistic endeavors, Iyer wielded the pen as a weapon against injustice and colonial oppression, setting an exemplary standard of fearless, ethical journalism. G.
