At nearly 65, I’ve been an airline pilot for 36 years

Image
At nearly 65, I’ve been an airline pilot for 36 years. I'm reasonably intelligent but far from a genius, and certainly not receiving job offers from JPL or NASA. Just an average guy who excels at being humble. At 64, I had to learn to fly the most advanced airliner in service, the Airbus A350, after flying the simpler Boeing 767 for the past 25 years. I had never flown an Airbus, which is fundamentally different from a Boeing. I was the oldest person to attempt Delta’s A350 Initial Qualification training program. I was warned that even younger pilots found the training extremely challenging, and that my age might make success unlikely. The A350 is a complex aircraft with a 7000-page training manual, countless training videos, 6 weeks of simulators, and difficult electronic and oral exams. Many doubted I could do it. Nonsense! I went through the training and found it manageable. It was no more challenging than my MD-11 training in 1991 at age 34, despite the A350’s more

"Moondram Pirai" (1982) is a timeless classic in Indian cinema, starring Kamal Haasan and Sridevi. Directed by Balu Mahendra, the film is celebrated for its poignant storytelling, mesmerizing performances, and evocative music by Ilaiyaraaja. Kamal Haasan's portrayal of the school teacher who cares for a woman with amnesia, played by Sridevi, showcases his immense talent and depth as an actor. The film is a beautiful exploration of love, loss, and the innocence of relationships, leaving a lasting impact on its audience. Sridevi's performance as the vulnerable, child-like character remains one of her most memorable roles. The film's climax, marked by its emotional intensity, continues to be etched in the memories of viewers. "Moondram Pirai" is a testament to the power of cinema to touch hearts and evoke profound emotions.

The terms "author" and "writer" are often used interchangeably, yet they encapsulate distinct identities, roles, and perceptions within the realm of literary creation

The terms "author" and "writer" are often used interchangeably, yet they encapsulate distinct identities, roles, and perceptions within the realm of literary creation. While both revolve around the art of writing, the nuances between them reveal significant differences in intention, recognition, and impact. A writer is anyone who engages in the act of writing. This broad category encompasses journalists, bloggers, poets, novelists, and even those who jot down thoughts in a diary. Writing, in its purest form, is an act of communication and expression, a way to convey ideas, emotions, stories, or information. The writer's focus is often on the craft itself, the process of finding the right words to articulate their message effectively. An author, on the other hand, carries a more specific connotation. An author is a writer who has created a substantial and acknowledged body of work, typically published and available to a wider audience. Authorship impl

A Balanced Review of Indian 2

Image
A Balanced Review of Indian 2 In recent times, the wave of negativity and trolling targeting the movie "Indian 2" has been both disheartening and unjust. As an ardent admirer of Indian cinema and a lifelong fan of Kamal Haasan, I feel compelled to address this unfair barrage of criticism. It's essential to acknowledge the efforts and creativity that go into making a film, especially one as ambitious as "Indian 2," before passing judgment based on skewed opinions and partial views. "Indian 2," directed by Shankar and starring Kamal Haasan, delves into critical social issues with a gripping narrative. The movie stands out for its powerful performances, particularly by Kamal Haasan, whose portrayal of Senapathy is both compelling and inspiring. His dedication to the character shines through, reflecting his decades of experience and passion for cinema. The cinematography and special effects in "Indian 2" are noteworthy. The visual gra

Kannada is such an amazing and sweet language

Kannada is such an amazing and sweet language. Although I am Tamil by birth and have made Kolkata my home, and love Bengali as much as I love my mother tongue Tamil, I have a deep-rooted love for the Kannada language and culture. This fondness stems from my childhood spent in Bangalore, from birth up to class 4.  Growing up in Bangalore, I was immersed in the Kannada language and the vibrant culture of the region. The rhythmic sounds of Kannada, the warmth of its people, and the rich traditions left an indelible mark on me. From the bustling markets to the serene parks, every aspect of Bangalore life was intertwined with Kannada, shaping my early years in a profound way. As a child, I remember the joy of celebrating various festivals where the entire community came together in a display of unity and tradition. The melodious songs, the traditional dances, and the delicious cuisine of Karnataka became an integral part of my identity. These experiences cultivated a deep appreciation for t

In today's globalized world, the ability to communicate in multiple languages is often seen as a valuable asset. English, with its widespread use, has become a universal medium, and in India, Hindi is frequently promoted as a national language. However, this mindset, while practical in certain contexts, can be profoundly detrimental to the rich canvas of cultures, languages, and traditions that define our human experience. Ernest Hemingway’s Tips for Writing

Image
Ernest Hemingway’s Tips for Writing: 1. To get started, write one true sentence. "Sometimes when I was starting a new story and couldn't get it going, I would sit in front of the fire and squeeze the peel of little oranges into the edge of the flame and watch the sputter of blue they made. I would stand and look out over the roofs of Paris and think, 'Do not worry. You have always written before and you will write now.'" 2. Always stop for the day while you still know what will happen next. "The best way is always to stop when you are going good and when you know what will happen next. If you do that every day when you are writing a novel you will never be stuck." 3. Never think about the story when you’re not working. "I had learned already never to empty the well of my writing, but always to stop when there was still something there in the deep part of the well, and let it refill at night from the springs that fed it." 4. When it’

Listening is a profound art, one that we have neglected to cultivate

Image
Listening is a profound art, one that we have neglected to cultivate. To truly listen to another person is also to listen to yourself—to your own problems, uncertainties, miseries, and the gradual mechanical degradation of the mind. In this conversation, we are exploring what it means to be human, which means you. Psychologically, you are the world, and the world is you.  People may have different appearances, live in different climates, and have different circumstances, but fundamentally, every human being experiences the same turmoil and noise of life, often without recognizing its beauty. So, you and I, and everyone else, are the world because we share these experiences. This is a fact, not a theory. Therefore, you are the world, and the world is you.  I hope you are truly listening to this. We have lost the art of listening. To fully understand that the world is you and you are the world might sound strange, illogical, or unreal. Often, we only partially listen, wishing

"The oldest, shortest words - ‘yes’ and ‘no’ - are those which require the most thought,"

Image
Pythagoras' statement, "The oldest, shortest words - ‘yes’ and ‘no’ - are those which require the most thought," encapsulates a profound insight into the human condition and decision-making process. Although Pythagoras is more widely recognized for his contributions to mathematics, particularly the Pythagorean theorem, his philosophical musings also demonstrate his deep understanding of human psychology. Analysis of the Quote Simplicity and Complexity: The words "yes" and "no" are fundamental to human communication. They are simple in their form but immensely complex in their implications. Every decision, affirmation, or denial made with these words carries a weight of consequences and requires careful consideration. Decision-Making Process: The process of arriving at a "yes" or "no" involves evaluating numerous factors, potential outcomes, personal beliefs, and external influences. This complexity underscores the depth

"It takes a library to raise a child."

Image
The image depicts a young girl surrounded by beloved literary characters, emphasizing the quote, "It takes a library to raise a child." This profound statement highlights the indispensable role of literature in a child's development. Unlike the adage "It takes a village to raise a child," which underscores the importance of community support, this quote elevates the significance of books and stories in shaping young minds. Books introduce children to a myriad of perspectives, cultures, and ideas that they might not encounter in their immediate environment. Through literature, children embark on adventures with characters like the wise and gentle Aslan from "The Chronicles of Narnia," the brave and resourceful Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz," and the ever-curious Winnie the Pooh. These characters become companions and mentors, teaching valuable lessons about courage, empathy, and the complexities of the human experience. A library

Mani Kaul was a pivotal figure in the Indian parallel cinema movement, known for his innovative approach to filmmaking and narrative techniques. His films, such as "Uski Roti," "Ashadh Ka Ek Din," "Duvidha," and "Satah Se Uthata Admi," are celebrated for their artistic and abstract qualities, encouraging open interpretation. Born as Rabindranath Kaul on December 25, 1944, in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, Mani Kaul hailed from a Kashmiri family. He was the nephew of veteran filmmaker Mahesh Kaul. His passion for cinema was ignited early, partly due to a friend's family-owned theater. He later graduated from Jaipur University in 1963 and joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), where he studied under the guidance of Ritwik Ghatak. Kaul’s films are distinguished by their divergence from traditional cinema. Martin Scorsese once described two types of cinema: one akin to an amusement park, directing the audience's emotions,

In life, there are many players whose goals we defend with enthusiasm and support, but when circumstances become foggy, they often leave us behind.

Image
In December 1937, during a match between Chelsea FC and Charlton FC at Stamford Bridge Stadium in London, play was halted and eventually abandoned in the 60th minute due to dense fog. Unbeknownst to him, Charlton FC’s legendary goalkeeper, Sam Bartram, continued guarding the goal for an additional fifteen minutes after the game was called off.  Bartram didn’t hear the referee's whistle because of the noise from the crowd behind him. He stood at the goal, arms outstretched, completely focused in the fog, believing his teammates were on the attack.  It was only fifteen minutes later that the stadium police approached and informed him that the match had been stopped. With great sorrow, Sam Bartram uttered these famous words: "HOW SAD THAT MY FRIENDS FORGOT ME WHEN I WAS GUARDING THEIR GATE." In life, there are many players whose goals we defend with enthusiasm and support, but when circumstances become foggy, they often leave us behind.

Happy Rath Yatra 2024

Image
🌟 The resonating sound of conch shells blends with the synchronized music of drums and bells as the chanting rises in tempo and faith. Lord Jagannath, the reincarnation of Lord Krishna, is brought out of the temple in the holy town of Puri, Orissa. 🕉️✨ According to legend, Lord Jagannath desired to visit his birthplace, Mathura, yearly along with his brother Lord Balabhadra (Balaram) and sister Goddess Subhadra. This journey, from the Jagannath Temple in Puri to the Gundicha Devi Temple, is known as the Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra. 🛕 Starting on June 29th and celebrated on July 7th, the Puri Rath Yatra is a vibrant spectacle where the three deities are carried on chariots to Gundicha Temple. This is the only time idols are taken out of the temple in India, allowing people from all faiths to see the deities and participate in the procession. 🌍🙏 Before the Yatra, the idols undergo a ritualistic bath and are kept in isolation. On the day of the Yatra, the King of Puri, a de

Life can often feel like a solitary journey, especially when you're dedicated to your path but surrounded by silence

Life can often feel like a solitary journey, especially when you're dedicated to your path but surrounded by silence. The sensation of isolation can be overwhelming, making you question the value of your efforts and the worthiness of your goals. However, there's a profound truth that often goes unnoticed: the work you do with sincerity and integrity has a unique way of reaching out into the world, connecting you with like-minded souls. In moments of solitude, it's essential to remember that true and conscientious work resonates beyond the immediate confines of your environment. This kind of work is imbued with authenticity and passion, qualities that inherently attract others. When you pour your heart and soul into what you do, you're not just creating something of value—you're sending out a beacon to others who share your values and vision. Consider the countless artists, writers, scientists, and thinkers who have toiled away in isolation, often feeling
